AKTU Grading System 2025 (SGPA, YGPA, CGPA & Percentage Guide)
Updated 2025 – Official method used by AKTU, Lucknow
Dr. A.P.J. Abdul Kalam Technical University (AKTU), Lucknow uses an absolute grading system. This system converts marks into grades and grade points instead of showing only raw marks. After every semester, students get SGPA. At the end of a year, they get YGPA. At the end of the course, they get the final CGPA.

How SGPA is Calculated in AKTU
SGPA (Semester Grade Point Average) is calculated by dividing total credit points by total credits. SGPA (Semester Grade Point Average) shows how well you performed in a single semester. It is calculated on the basis of the grades you scored in each subject and the number of credits assigned to those subjects. To calculate SGPA, the university multiplies the grade point of each subject with its credits, adds all the results together, and then divides the total by the sum of all subject credits. In simple words, SGPA tells your semester-wise academic performance.
SGPA = Σ (Credit × Grade Point) ÷ Σ Credits
| Subject | Credits | Grade | Grade Point | Credit × Grade |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Subject 1 | 5.5 | B+ | 8 | 44 |
| Subject 2 | 4 | C | 6 | 24 |
| Subject 3 | 5 | B | 7 | 35 |
| Subject 4 | 3 | A+ | 10 | 30 |
| Total | 17.5 | 133 |
SGPA = 133 ÷ 17.5 = 7.60
How YGPA is Calculated
YGPA (Yearly Grade Point Average) shows your academic performance for one complete academic year. It is calculated by combining the performance of both the odd and even semesters of that year. To calculate YGPA, the university multiplies the SGPA of the odd semester with its total credits and the SGPA of the even semester with its credits, adds both results, and then divides the total by the combined credits of both semesters. In simple words, YGPA tells how well you performed in an entire year instead of just one semester.
YGPA = (SGPA(odd) × Credits(odd) + SGPA(even) × Credits(even)) ÷ (Total Credits of both semesters)
Example result: YGPA = 6.99
How CGPA is Calculated
CGPA is calculated after the final semester of the course. CGPA is the final score that shows your overall academic performance across all semesters. It is calculated by giving weight to each semester based on its total credits. To calculate CGPA, the university multiplies the SGPA of every semester with the total credits of that semester, adds all these values together, and then divides the total by the overall credits of all semesters. In simple words, CGPA is not just a normal average, but a credit-based average that reflects your complete performance during the entire course.
CGPA = Σ (Semester Credits × SGPA) ÷ Total Credits of all semesters
AKTU Official CGPA to Percentage Formula
Percentage = (CGPA − 0.75) × 10
Example:
(8.66 − 0.75) × 10 = 79.1%
Important AKTU Rules for Students
- Grade F means fail and student must reappear in that subject.
- If SGPA is below 5, improvement exams may be allowed.
- The university may moderate marks to maintain fairness.
